Avril Lavigne debuts new single at Special Olympics ceremony

LOS ANGELES, July 27 (UPI) -- For the first time in over a year singer Avril Lavigne took the stage to perform on Saturday.

The "Girlfriend" singer debuted her new single, "Fly," at the Special Olympics opening ceremony. The singer rocked a stunning black Alice + Olivia gown while donning jewelry by Le Vian.

Lavigne, who has been battling Lyme disease, posted a photo of her performance on Instagram saying she was "honored" to be there, saying, "This was a very beautiful night for me."

She went on to thank those who supported her through her struggle and who also donated to her foundation. "I am so happy to have made it on stage tonight for the first performance in a year. Thank you for having me and please enjoy my song Fly," she said.

The songstress also posted a photo of herself back stage prior to her onstage debut.
