WASHINGTON, July 16 (UPI) -- Instagram has banned #curvy from its search terms, in what the site calls an effort to keep it clean.
The hashtag is banned along with #weed, #naked, #nude and #sex. The removal of #curvy has caused an up roar on social media.
Yahoo Fashion reports terms like #curvy and #curvygirl have been terms adopted by many in a body positive movement. While they can be searched, the singular term of #curvy has been banned by the site completely.
The company says the hashtag violates its community guidelines. CNN reports it was being used by porn companies, but many other tags like #skinny and #fat were still searchable.
This is not the first controversy Instagram has faced. The social media platform has come under fire for banning pictures of the female breast, leading to the #freethenipple campaign, supported by celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Chrissy Teigan.
The hashtah #thin comes with a warning since many of the images due depict anorexia and other unhealthy body types, but #curvy has been fully banned.
