WASHINGTON, June 30 (UPI) -- Playwright Larry Kramer, known for his work in Hollywood and as an AIDS activist, celebrated his 80th birthday last week - the day before a landmark Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay marriage.

A recent HBO documentary, Larry Kramer in Love & Anger, recounts his life. But his work isn't done.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kramer says he has finished writing the sequel to The Normal Heart.

In April, he released a new novel, The American People, Volume 1: Search for My Heart, which describes some historical figures and Hollywood legends, including Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, as gay.

In the interview, Kramer also recounts how much Hollywood has changed and described gatherings like Cole Porter's naked dinner parties. He also said Clark Gable refused to be directed by gay director George Cukor in Gone with the Wind.

Some historians dispute the stories, but Kramer says the book is based on 10 years of research and is planning a sequel.

His The Normal Heart sequel picks up where the original film left off after the death of the character Felix. He also mentions that he hopes Julia Roberts will reprise her role in the film, since the cast was close during filming.
