NEW YORK, May 19 (UPI) -- As the Late Show with David Letterman finishes up its 33-year run, guest Tom Hanks thought it would be fitting to take a selfie.

The Da Vinci Code actor pulled out his personal selfie stick Monday night in order to snap a pic with the departing host.

"What a minute, what is this?" 68-year-old Letterman said as he snatched the stick from Hanks' lap and readily banged it on his desk.

The actor explained that his wife, Rita Wilson, insisted that they'd never keep selfie sticks in the house. "But you know what Dave?," he asked, "They sell these selfies all over Florence, which was the birthplace of the Renaissance."

"I think by and large, they can be pretty goofy," he said as he began extending the stick. "But look, [the audience] can't see it, but look at the throw on this baby."

After struggling to set up the stick for a minute or two, the celebrities successfully documented their final meeting on set -- making sure the camera was "above the chin."

The Oscar-winning actor implored that Letterman use a selfie stick in his retirement: "In a couple of weeks when you head down to -- I'm just gonna guess what you're gonna be up to, two words -- Space Camp, take one of these bad boys with you."

David Letterman will film the finale episode of the Late Show May 20.
