WASILLA, Alaska, May 19 (UPI) -- Sarah Palin said Monday that her daughter Bristol Palin's wedding to U.S. Marine Dakota Meyer has been canceled, less than a week ahead of the planned nuptials.

"They have informed loved ones that unfortunately the announced celebration planned for May 23 will not be held." the former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate wrote on Facebook.

Palin said that both families will still gather on the day of Bristol's planned wedding in Meyer's home state of Kentucky.

"The Palins and Meyers are happily looking forward to still being at 'the old Kentucky home' on May 23 to celebrate life, in general!" Palin added. "Family members and close friends know they are welcome to share a great barbecue on the farm that day."

The news follows tabloid reports that Meyer, a Medal of Honor recipient, had failed to tell Bristol about a previous marriage that ended in divorce.

Sarah Palin's Facebook post included a statement from Bristol addressing the rumors:

Regarding salacious headlines in recent days about "secret wives," Dakota and I discussed our past relationships prior to our engagement. Dakota was legally divorced years ago, as any good reporter could and should have disclosed to readers. As usual, false stories and dramatically written headlines begging controversy should be disregarded, and we have faith that our privacy will be respected at this time by those with decency. Thank you! – Bristol

Meyer, 26, proposed to Bristol, 24, last March at a Rascal Flatts concert.

"Last night, Sgt Dakota Meyer proposed and I said yes!" Bristol wrote in a blog post.

Bristol was to Levi Johnston, the father of her 7-year-old son, Tripp.
