BOCA RATON, Fla., May 13 (UPI) -- Scott Stapp is opening up about what caused his erratic behavior over the passed year. The Creed frontman reveals he suffers with bipolar disorder.

The singer made headlines in 2014 when he released a video on his Facebook page, claiming that he was broke, living in a Holiday Inn and under viscous attack. A month later, TMZ reported that Stapp's wife, Jaclyn, called 911 and told them that her husband threatened to kill President Obama.

In a recent exclusive interview with People, he shared what initiated his conduct.

"I had a psychotic break that was brought on by alcohol and drug abuse," he says. "I was hallucinating. I drove around the United States for a month, following an angel that I saw on the hood of my car." Stapp, who is currently in recovery, began a program at a rehab center that specializes in dual-diagnosis patients. It was there he learned about his bipolar disorder diagnosis, which caused his unexpected shifts in moods.

"It was hard to process. There's a stigma associated with it. But Jaclyn kept telling me, 'Embrace it. We love you.' It became a big sign of relief, because finally, we had an answer" the 41-year-old musician said.

His wife was relieved to find an answer to her husbands unraveling behavior.

"It made sense," she said. "I definitely knew there was something going on for years, but I couldn't pinpoint what it was."

During Stapp's road to recovery, he takes medication for his disorder, works through a 12-step program, and meets with a sponsor.

"Nothing is more important than my sobriety," Stapp says.
