NEW YORK, May 12 (UPI) -- Mad Max star Charlize Theron took a turn toward Mad Hatter on The Tonight Show Monday night, but not without adding a little twist of her own.

Host Jimmy Fallon and the 39-year-old actress agreed to play dress-up by choosing each other's costumes to begin the episode.

Theron walked on stage in flashy gold pants and an oversized curly wig under a silly top hat, while Fallon strutted out wearing a pink pantsuit and platforms shoes with dice in the heels.

Fallon, 40, admitted he was surprised to find the costume in his dressing room.

"This is what you chose for me. You thought this would make me feel more...comfortable," he said to the audience's laughs.

"I thought it would make your shoulders smaller," she responded.

Fallon couldn't grasp his character -- "Am I a man or a woman?" -- but Theron helped clear that up saying, "Your name is Rosetta McClintock."

Theron's character, Bonanza, apparently played with Prince for a while and was expected to play a riff on the bass guitar with The Roots. The costumed duo then concluded the segment with a memorable jam session with the band.

After the two changed, Fallon asked Theron about her 3-year-old son, Jackson. She said his imagination is running wild; she overheard him playing with his dolls in the bathtub yelling, 'Karen! Handle it!'"

"That sounds like something from a Lifetime movie!" Fallon said.

The Tonight Show airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. eastern on NBC.
