LOS ANGELES, May 12 (UPI) -- As part of his effort to clean up his bad boy reputation after being involved in a handful of childish antics, Justin Bieber admits he was unhappy with himself during the last few years.

In an interview with Seventeen, the June/July cover star told the magazine: "I was rebelling a little bit. I was getting cockier and cockier. I didn't have people to check me, I looked back and I was disappointed in myself."

The 21-year-old recently completed his court-ordered anger management courses, issued after the singer threw raw eggs at a neighbors house, causing $80,000 in damages.

Bieber wants to make sure his fans know that the mistakes he made in the past, don't define who he is today. The "All That Matters" singer says, "You have to own up to the mistakes. You have to say, 'I'm sorry if I've let you down.' I always want to be honest and let people know that those mistakes aren't who I am. Who I am is someone who really cares about people."

Now, the best thing for the singer to do is surround himself with people who support his efforts to change. "I need healthy relationships with people I can feel safe with," he shares. "People I can say whatever to, and I'm not going to be judged."

Although Bieber didn't specifically mention any of the girls he has recently been linked to, like Kendall Jenner or Shanina Shaik, he still shared what he is looking for in a partner.

"In a girl, I want someone who's confident in herself and honest, I have to find her very attractive and as someone I can see myself with for the rest of my life."

The issue hits newsstands May 19.
