WATERVILLE, Maine, April 30 (UPI) -- Walter Cronkite's grandson, Peter, was found dead in his dorm room at Colby College on Sunday.
The death of the late news anchor's 22-year-old grandchild was announced in an obituary published in the New York Times on April 28.
In the obituary, the family revealed he took his own life. No further details about his suicide have been announced. He was expected to graduate as a classics major in May.
Cronkite was involved in extracurricular activities at school. He acted as the co-captain of the Colby rugby team and as the sports editor of the Colby Echo. "His life on teams in school and area hockey leagues as a goalie was a great happiness in his life," the family said.
The student was scheduled to receive the Classics department's Foster Prize for Classical Civilization for achieving excellence in his major, according to a letter written by the president of the college, David A. Greene.
"Our hearts are heavy as we try to come to terms with this tremendous loss," he wrote in the letter addressing the students. "Of course those who were closest to Peter bear the greatest burden. But the death of a member of our community is a loss for everyone."
The funeral service will be held Saturday, May 2.
