NEW YORK, April 14 (UPI) -- "NCIS" actress Pauley Perrette takes off her character, Abby's forensic gloves and digs her hands into dough for her new cookbook, "Donna Bell's Bake Shop," available Tuesday.

Belonging to the most popular TV drama in the world, Perrette, 46, also co-owns the Donna Bell's Bake Shop in Manhattan. In an interview with CBS This Morning Tuesday, Perrette expands on her background and Southern nature.

"I wanted to be a cop," she says, "and [Abby Sciuto] was a complete accident." The actress earned her master's degree in criminology and would have been a police officer if it wasn't for her big break. She was discovered while working as a bartender in New York City and began doing commercials, voice-overs, TV shows, and short films until she landed her role at "NCIS" in 2003.

Along with her two best friends, Perrette opened up Donna Bell's Bake Shop in honor of her late mother's Southern cooking. It features recipes and heartwarming stories about Donna Bell and the bakeshop's history.

The actress will commence a book tour at choice locations in New York and Los Angeles throughout April.
