CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas, April 9 (UPI) -- Two decades after her death, Latin music star Selena is returning to the stage as Selena The One, a "walking, talking, singing, and dancing digital embodiment," according to an announcement on the star's official Facebook page.

Selena's immediate family partnered up with Acrovirt -- a Nevada-based tech company -- to help create an autonomous hologram hoped to come as close as possible to the late celebrity's persona.

"By no means is this something that's creepy or weird," Selena's sister, Suzette Quintanilla, told Billboard in a phone interview Wednesday. "We think it's something amazing. A lot of the new fans that did not get to experience what Selena was about hopefully will be able to get a sense of her with new technology that's going to be coming out," she said.

Acrovirt's official site for Selena The One announced an Indigogo Campaign, set to launch April 16, aiming to raise $500,000 for the venture. With the money, the company will utilize advanced technology "that does not have the limitations of past technologies such as holograms or holographs," to create a Selena that can "release new songs and videos," collaborate with today's artists, and even go on tour.

Suzette says Acrovirt approached the Quintanilla family in 2014 to propose the idea of a "Selena Digitized Human Essence." There have been others before it -- namely those of Tupac Shakur and Michael Jackson -- but Acrovirt asserts that it is the first project of its kind.

The Quintanilla family is reportedly sending Acrovirt all the materials they can to help them best represent the artist. Selena Quintanilla was a crossover pop star during the 80s and 90s known for her Tejano performances. She was named female entertainer of the year at the 1986 Tejano Music awards at age 15, and continued to release five studio albums. The gun-wielding president of her fan club killed Selena in 1995.

"It's not about replacing Selena in any shape, way or form," Suzette warns, "it's just something to help her legacy continue growing."

If the project is completed on time, Selena The One will go on tour in 2018.
