LOS ANGELES, April 1 (UPI) -- Avril Lavigne has revealed her recent health issue to be Lyme disease.

The 30-year-old singer detailed her struggle with the illness in an interview with People. Lavigne previously admitted to "not feeling well" and "having some health issues" in December 2014, but did not elaborate on her condition until this week.

"I could barely eat, and when we went to the pool, I had to leave and go lie in bed," she recalled of an October trip to Las Vegas with friends. "My friends asked, 'What's wrong?' I didn't know. I had no idea a bug bite could do this. I was bedridden for five months."

"I felt like I couldn't breathe, I couldn't talk and I couldn't move. I thought I was dying," she confessed. "There were definitely times I couldn't shower for a full week because I could barely stand. It felt like having all your life sucked out of you."

Mother Judy Lavigne moved in to the singer's home to act as a caretaker, while husband Chad Kroeger helped while not on tour with Nickelback. The songstress said she is now feeling "80 percent better," and ready to release new single "Fly" this month.

Lyme disease is a bacterial disease transferred to humans by infected ticks. Those affected may remain asymptomatic, but untreated cases can cause fever, headache, pain in muscles, joints and tendons, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans.
