LOS ANGELES, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Johnny Depp surprised everyone by getting married to fiancee Amber Heard days ahead of their planned nuptials.

After months of breakup rumors and controversy, Depp and Heard were slated to marry next weekend on the 45-acre private island the actor purchased in 2004 for $3.6 million.

Instead, they tied the knot at Depp's West Hollywood home Tuesday. They now plan to travel to the island in the Bahamas for a second service.

Depp and Heard, 28, confirmed their engagement in January 2014 after dating for almost two years. This will be the first marriage for Heard and the second for Depp, who wed Lori Anne Allison in 1983. After ending the relationship, Depp famously dated Vanessa Paradis for 14 years. Depp and Paradis have two children.
