Dan Aykroyd on 'magnificent' cast of new 'Ghostbusters' film

The actor's statement comes days after director Paul Feig revealed that Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon had been cast in the lead roles for "Ghostbusters 3."

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- Ghostbusters writer Dan Aykroyd is happy with the recently announced all-female cast for the film's forthcoming sequel.

"The Aykroyd family is delighted by this inheritance of the Ghostbusters torch by these most magnificent women in comedy," Aykrod who starred and wrote the first two installments of the Ghostbusters saga told The Hollywood Reporter.

"My great grandfather, Dr. Sam Aykroyd, the original Ghostbuster, was a man who empowered women in his day, and this is a beautiful development in the legacy of our family business."

His stament comes days after director Paul Feig revealed on Twitter that Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon had been cast in the lead roles of Ghostbusters 3.

Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson portrayed the ghost-catching foursome in the first two films of the franchise which were released in 1984 and1989. Ackroyd will co-write the new film along with Katie Dippold, Feig and Ramis.

Ghostbusters 3 will be released in theaters July 22, 2016.
