LONDON, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- The sex abuse trial for rocker Gary Glitter, also known as Paul Gadd, started in London Monday with the swearing in of the jury and opening arguments from the prosecution.

Gadd has been charged with 10 sexual abuse offenses for crimes committed between 1975 and 1980, including attempted rape of a girl under the age of 13.

Prosecutor John Price started arguments by telling the court Gadd snuck into a girl's bed and tried to rape her in the '70s. The unnamed girl was able to fend him off and get to safety. The victim said she told select confidants, but decided not to go to the police until after she heard he plead guilty to child pornography charges in 1999.

"It seemed to her [the alleged victim] that recent events in Bristol -- as she understood them to be from the publicity - offered a better chance that she might be believed when accusing so famous and popular a man of so dreadful a crime," said Price.

He is also charged with plying a young girl with alcohol in order to assault her and the assault of two young fans.

Gadd is known for the 1970s hits "I'm The Leader Of The Gang (I Am)," "I Love You Love Me Love" and "Always Yours."
