Michael Sam engaged to boyfriend Vito Cammisano

ROME, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Michael Sam and boyfriend Vito Cammisano are engaged.

The 25-year-old former NFL player and Cammisano got engaged in Rome, reports Page Six. The couple have been on vacation in Europe since Dec. 30, and shared photos from Italy this week on Instagram.

"People, he is officially off the market!!!!!" a friend of Cammisano confirmed, according to TMZ. "My beautiful friend @vitcamm is getting married!!!!!!! (AHHHHHHHHH!) I love you so much Vit. So damn excited...so ready to celebrate! @mikeysam52 #vitoisengaged."

Sam and Cammisano attended college together at University of Missouri, and have been dating since 2014. The couple famously kissed after Sam became the first openly gay football player to be drafted in the NFL in May 2014.

Sam was chosen in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams, but was cut by the team after training camp. He was subsequently picked up by the Dallas Cowboys, but didn't progress beyond the practice squad. He is currently a free agent.
