NEW YORK, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- The host of the HBO series Last Week Tonight, John Oliver, recently posted a video explaining how to handle New Year's Eve.

"New Year's Eve is like the death of a pet," Oliver says. "You know it's going to happen, but somehow you're never truly prepared for how awful it is."

Oliver goes on to explain that he hates New Year's Eve because he has to be around strangers, he's often "drunk, cold and tired" and he has to see Ryan Seacrest on TV doing the ball drop in New York City.

Oliver recommends people use an excuse to get out of going to a New Year's Eve party, such as telling friends a family member is ill or telling them you're doing a cleanse. He said he doesn't know what to do if you're asked to go out for a "girl's night" because he's "never been asked to join a girl's night."
