LOS ANGELES, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Katie Holmes doesn't want to be defined by Tom Cruise.

The 35-year-old actress said as much in an interview for People magazine's November 10 issue. Holmes and Cruise's marriage and subsequent divorce provided endless fodder for tabloids, but Holmes told the publication the relationship doesn't define her.

"I don't want that moment in my life to define me, to be who I am," she declared. "I don't want that to be what I'm known as. I was an actor before, an actor during and an actor now."

Holmes and Cruise began their high-profile romance in 2005, and welcomed daughter Suri in April 2006. The pair married in November 2006, and the actress filed for divorce in June 2012. Holmes was reportedly fearful of Cruise and the Church of Scientology after the breakup, but told the publication she is no longer scared of anything.

"I don't have any fear now, I don't have a lot of rules for myself and I don't take myself that seriously," she shared. "I feel ready for new challenges."

Holmes came to fame as Joe Potter on The WB series Dawson's Creek, and has since appeared in Batman Begins, Thank You for Smoking and The Giver. The actress is scheduled to star in Mania Days and Woman in Gold in 2015, and will reprise Jacqueline Kennedy for a new REELZ miniseries.
