NEW YORK, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Robert Downey Jr. would like to reconnect with Sarah Jessica Parker... but only with Matthew Broderick's permission.

The 49-year-old actor discussed his relationship with the Sex & the City actress in an interview on The Howard Stern Show. Downey and Parker were together from 1984 to 1991, and the Iron Man star confessed their breakup over his drug and alcohol abuse left him heartbroken.

"I've never been the kind of person to acknowledge what's going on with me at the time, and I'd try to make light of it, but sure, when you're with someone for seven years, 18 to our mid-20s, it's kind of a big deal," he admitted.

Parker married husband Matthew Broderick in 1997, and Downey wed second wife, Susan Levin, in 2003. The actor told host Howard Stern he would like to catch up with his ex-girlfriend while he is in New York, but said he would ask Broderick's permission first.

"I'll make a point of trying to see her while I'm here. I'd like to," he shared. "I just want to check in for a few minutes. I love Matthew Broderick."

"First of all, I respect both of them so much, and now we have to get past this conversation," he continued. "For any situation like this, I think enough time has to pass. You don't have to make a big deal of it when the time is right."

Downey and his wife are expecting their second child, a daughter, in November.
