HOUSTON, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Tina Knowles says she is in a good place with boyfriend Richard Lawson.

The 60-year-old businesswoman detailed her new relationship at the Texas Women's Empowerment Foundation's 8th annual Women & Money luncheon in Houston. Knowles was previously married to Mathew Knowles for 33 years, and shared her struggle with low self-esteem after his affair with Alexsandra Wright and their subsequent divorce.

"I was very sad," she admitted.

"It doesn't matter who you are, what you are, what you've done, what you've had. You're a person, you're a human being. And when something strikes you like that, it takes the breath out of you. And my fight came back. After a while, I let myself feel sorry for myself for a minute and then I said, 'You know, I'm so blessed to have all the opportunities that I have. I don't have the right to feel sorry.'"

"So I would tell my kids, 'You know what, you can call me and I'll be there if it's something important, but otherwise, I'm taking care of Tina. This is my selfish moment,'" she continued. "And before I knew it, I started liking me again! I started being important, not everybody else."

Knowles admitted she felt "hurt" when her ex-husband married former model Gena Charmaine Avery, but kept busy and surrounded herself with friends to weather the "blow to [her] ego." She and longtime friend Richard Lawson began a romantic relationship, and Knowles is now healthy and happy.

"It's been now a year and five months and I'm in a committed relationship with that handsome man," she gushed of Lawson. "And I'm in my happiest I've been in a long, long time."
