DALLAS, Ore., Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Jesse Helt -- the man who was Miley Cyrus' date to the VMA's -- has been sentenced to jail for six months. He was sentenced to jail on Tuesday.
Helt, who was a homeless man Cyrus met at a shelter for homeless youth had a warrant out for his arrest for violating the terms of his probation in 2011.
The 22-year-old was reportedly arrested in 2010 and charged with criminal mischief, criminal trespass and burglary after breaking into a man's house alleging the man had sold him bad marijuana.
The warrant came to light after Helt accepted the award for Video of the Year on Cyrus' behalf and used the chance to give an emotional speech about the plight of homeless youth.
Helt turned himself in to authorities in Dallas, Ore., shortly after he found out there was a warrant for his arrest.
Cyrus is reportedly paying his legal fees.
