Liza Minnelli to undergo surgery for broken back

NEW YORK, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Liza Minnelli is bedridden with a broken back.

The 68-year-old actress was unable to attend Joan Rivers' funeral because of the injury, and detailed the accident to Page Six.

"I broke my lower back," Minnelli shared. "I was picked up my dogs -- and they jumped. And I got twisted and fell. I thought it's nothing. But it wasn't nothing. It became something. After an X-ray, seems I busted it and have to have it fused. The operation's next week."

Minnelli said she "loved" Rivers and "desperately" wanted to attend the service, but was unable to go because she can't walk. The actress experienced trouble with her spine "a few years ago," but improved after surgery.

Minnelli last appeared as Lucille Austero on season four of Arrested Development.
