LAS VEGAS, Sept. 3 (UPI) -- Jake "The Snake" Roberts remains hospitalized but is making progress.

The 59-year-old WWE legend is off his ventilator and able to speak as of Tuesday, friend and fellow wrestler Sinn Bodhi reported on Facebook. Roberts has been in treatment at a Las Vegas hospital since he suddenly became unconscious on August 27. It was discovered he has double pneumonia, and he underwent a bronchoscopy on August 31.

"Great news!" Bodhi wrote Tuesday evening. "Docs took Jake off ventilator way earlier than expected! He is kicking ass on his spirometer breathing tests. If he keeps up this pace he will not need to go back on ventilator so everyone please cross your fingers!"

"Jake finally can speak for the first time since last Wed," he continued. "Even thought Jake is off the ventilator for the time being he will be monitored for 24-48 hours before docs decide if it is safe to keep him off. Once Jake could speak he wanted steak, milkshakes, eggs & donuts. He is only allowed to get his nutrients intravenously for the time being. Jake even joked that he would do anything for a donut if he had to."

Bodhi has remained by Roberts' side throughout his illness, and one of the wrestler's sons flew in to Las Vegas on Tuesday night.
