The director was nominated by longtime collaborator Laura Dern.

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- David Lynch completed the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge in a very David Lynch way.

The 68-year-old director was nominated by Laura Dern, who starred in his films Blue Velvet (1986), Wild at Heart (1990) and Inland Empire (2006). The actress wanted Lynch to perform the challenge with iced coffee, so he added a shot of espresso to the water before being doused.

Lynch began the opening bars of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" on the trumpet before he was soaked with the iced espresso water. He attempted to continue the song, but was immediately soaked again for his nomination from Justin Theroux. The director nominated Russian President Vladimir Putin in turn.

The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has raised over $80 million for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis research thus far.
