Placido Domingo to perform in Rio de Janeiro before Wold Cup final

Domingo, along with colleagues José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti, performed their Three Tenor Concert on the eve of four World Cup finals including Rome in 1990, Los Angeles in 1994, Paris in 1998 and Yokohama in 2002.

RIO DE JANEIRO, June 12 (UPI) -- Spanish tenor Placido Domingo is set to perform in Rio de Janeiro before the World Cup final on July 11.

The singer's website made the announcement in a statement revealing the performance would mark the "the first time in 19 years that Domingo appears in Rio de Janeiro."

"As one of sport's most visible ambassadors and a loyal soccer fan himself, Placido Domingo returns for the Concert in Rio! at HSCB Arena, a spectacular evening featuring Chinese pianist sensation Lang Lang, soprano Ana Maria Martinez, and Brazil's own Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira, conducted by Eugene Kohn," the declaration read.

The 73-year-old tenor is set to perform "some of the most exciting selections from [his] operatic repertoire as well as an array of pieces from other genres ranging from operetta, broadway, zarzuela and popular music from around the world."
