LOS ANGELES, May 10 (UPI) -- So much for "six seasons and a movie."

NBC finally decided to nix cult hit Community after years of behind-the-scenes drama, odd scheduling and near-cancellation.

Despite fan hopes for a sixth season, the network said Friday that the ensemble comedy's fifth would be its last.

"Thanks Community fans for being the greatest that have ever walked the earth & Thanks @danharmon for letting me be on the coolest show ever," star Joel McHale tweeted of the news.

Community's fifth season featured the return of its creator and showrunner Dan Harmon, who left the previous year over disputes with the network.

The series, which is owned by Sony Pictures, could still find a new home on another network. According to EW, Hulu and Comedy Central are possibilities.
