NEW YORK, April 28 (UPI) -- John Oliver opened his new show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver slamming Donald Sterling, Cliven Bundy and American news coverage of the Indian elections.
He took a shot at Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling for his racist comments to his girlfriend about her publicly associating with black people, and stated his amazement that he was able to supersede the other racist of the week, Cliven Bundy, who said that African Americans were better off in slavery.
"Cable news does not need to be focusing on an election that is happening in 926 days when there is an important one happening right now that they are all completely ignoring," said Oliver. "The biggest election in human history is taking place in India right now. Nearly one fifth of the world's working age population lives there. It has a direct economic impact on America."
John Oliver's debut on HBO was highly anticipated after he sat in for Jon Stewart on The Daily Show while Stewart was out of the country directing a film.
