LOS ANGELES, April 17 (UPI) -- Alicia Silverstone shares her opinions on parenting in her new book, The Kind Mama.

The 37-year-old actress is mother to son Bear Blu, age 2, and is an enthusiastic proponent of attachment parenting. She also advocates a vegan diet in the new book, and expresses her aversion to using medicine.

"He's never been sick-sick, just a little off from time to time," Silverstone writes of her son. "He's never had a drop of medicine. Because his body is a super-clean, healthy machine, it can defend itself against and flush out all the nasty stuff much more quickly than a baby whose diet isn't as kind."

"In most cases, those [over-the-counter] meds aren't necessary," she adds. "Antibiotics should also be used with care. Sometimes they are truly useful and can save lives, but when we over-administer them, we challenge bacteria to grow stronger and more resistant to treatment."

Silverstone is one of a growing number of parents who reject medication for their children. Some, including Jenny McCarthy and Kristen Cavallari, refuse vaccinations outright.

Anti-vaccine movements have been blamed for the resurgence of diseases such as the measles.

The actress touches upon the vaccination debate and writes, "There is increasing anecdotal evidence from doctors who have gotten distressed phone calls from parents claiming their child was 'never the same' after receiving a vaccine."

The Kind Mama hit bookshelves on Tuesday and is Silverstone's second book. The actress published a vegan nutrition guide, The Kind Diet, in 2009.
