AMC confirmed on Wednesday that The Walking Dead companion series is in the works.

The new series will technically not be a spinoff, as it will feature a whole new cast of characters different from the original show. It will also take place in a different location, possibly in the same timeline.

"We are going to see an entirely different corner of The Walking Dead," show creator Robert Kirkman told IGN last October. "It definitely won't be set in Georgia ... It's important to us that this show exists on its own."

"I think that the ideal situation is, when you're watching ... you're like, 'Wow, this is a really awesome show,'" Kirkman continued. "The whole other show doesn't need to exist for this show to be cool and stand on its own."

AMC said on Wednesday that Kirkman and series producer Gale Anne Hurd will also work on the new show. Writer-producer Dave Erickson (Sons of Anarchy) will join the team as showrunner, executive producer and co-writer.

No release date has been set for the new series.
