Michael C. Hall pleaded the fifth when asked about a Dexter spinoff during his appearance on Today.

The 43-year-old actor appeared on the morning show to discuss his return to Broadway for the upcoming play The Realistic Joneses, a dark comedy about two neighboring families who share the same last name. The conversation soon turned to Dexter.

Hall is well-known for his role the Showtime series, which ended in 2013 after an eight-season run, as the blood splatter analyst named Dexter who is also a serial killer. The actor also starred as David Fisher in Six Feet Under, a five-season HBO show about a family who owns a funeral home.

"It's good to get out of the death business," Hall said. "When you make an open-ended commitment to a character for a long period of time, it's nice if there's a lot of complexity and opportunity for evolution. But, yeah, it's nice to do something that is perhaps a bit lighter, and it's really great to get that feedback from [a live Broadway] audience every night."

Hall said, "It's something I can't even begin to wrap my head around at this point," when pressed about a Dexter spin-off, but he did leave the possibility open.

"I'll plead the fifth," the actor concluded. Showtime president David Nevins has previously said that a spin-off is possible under the condition that Hall returns.

The Realistic Joneses opens on April 6.
