X-Men: Days of Future Past released its highly anticipated second trailer on Monday.

The footage will only serve to further pique fan interest with its dramatic scenes from the upcoming film.

The trailer opens against a desolate landscape as Professor Xavier narrates, "So many battles waged over the years... and yet, none of them like this." A nod is given to the film's subtitle, "Days of Future Past," with glimpses of young and old Professor X (James McAvoy, Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender, Ian McKellen).

The tone is dark as various characters, including Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), are shown in seemingly desperate emotional and physical battles. The characters must join forces with their younger selves from X-Men: First Class in a fight for mutant survival that spans across two time periods.

X-Men: Days of Future Past will debut in theaters on May 23. A sequel, X-Men: Apocalypse, has already been scheduled for 2016.
