Sofia Coppola is currently in negotiation to direct a live-action version of The Little Mermaid.

Like the 1989 Disney adaptation, the new film will be based on the Danish fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen. The tale tells the story of a young mermaid who gives up her identity and life in the sea in order to become human and win the love of a human prince.

Universal Pictures and Working Title will produce the film, and Caroline Thompson (Edward Scissorhands) will write the script. Other details are currently unknown.

Coppola is known for her films' adult themes, but the new Mermaid movie will be geared toward both children and adults. Films she has previously directed include The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette, and 2013's The Bling Ring.
