Legendary musician Jimi Hendrix has been honored on a new United States Postal Service Forever stamp.
The new stamp is part of the USPS Music Icons series. Johnny Cash and Ray Charles are among those who have also been honored.
The art for Hendrix's stamp is a colorful painting, and depicts the 60s musician on his guitar. A dedication ceremony for the stamp will take place Thursday at SXSW in Austin. Former Guns 'n Roses guitarist Slash, Jane's Addiction singer Perry Ferrell, MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer, and ex-Doors guitarist Robby Krieger will perform after the ceremony during a celebratory concert for Hendrix.
"I am deeply touched and so are other members of the Hendrix family by the issuance of this stamp," Hendrix's sister Janie said in a statement. "I wish to thank the United States Postal Service for bestowing one of our nation's highest honors on my brother Jimi. While my brother has been cited many times as being among the most influential musicians of all time, the recognition implicit in his being portrayed on a US postage stamp ranks as an unparalleled honor."
The release of the stamp coincides with the US premiere of John Ridley's film, Jimi: All is by My Side. The film premiered at SXSW on Wednesday night, and stars Outkast's Andre 3000.
Rocker Janis Joplin will be the next musician honored by the USPS Music Icons series.
