National Book Award nominations announced

NEW YORK, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Rachel Kushner's "The Flamethrowers" and Jhumpa Lahiri's "The Lowland" are among the finalists for the U.S. National Book Award for fiction.

Also in the running for the prestigious literary prize for fiction are James McBride's "The Good Lord Bird," Thomas Pynchon's "Bleeding Edge" and George Saunders' "Tenth of December."

The finalists in the non-fiction category are Jill Lepore's "Book of Ages," Wendy Lower's "Hitler's Furies," George Packer's "The Unwinding," Alan Taylor's "The Internal Enemy" and Lawrence Wright's "Going Clear."

The National Book Foundation is to present the awards at a ceremony Nov. 20.
