'Perks' returns to school shelves after Judy Blume endorsement

CHICAGO, June 11 (UPI) -- Members of a suburban Chicago school board voted 6-1 to lift a Glen Ellyn District 41 middle-school ban of the book "Perks of Being a Wallflower."

Monday night's vote came after beloved young adult novelist Judy Blume campaigned to have Stephen Chbosky's book, which addresses sexuality and drug use, returned to school library shelves, the Chicago Tribune reported Tuesday.

It was removed after a parent complained about its content.

"I love the book 'Perks of Being a Wallflower,'" the Tribune quoted Blume as saying in a video clip made by students and emailed to school board members last weekend. "Keep the book alive."

Blume also mentioned the Glen Ellyn controversy during an appearance Sunday at the Printers Row Lit Fest where she was presented with the Tribune's Young Adult Literary Prize.

"Perks of Being a Wallflower" was adapted as a film last year. Starring Emma Watson, it was rated PG-13.
