Alan Cumming bringing his one-man 'Macbeth' to Broadway

NEW YORK, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Alan Cumming is bringing his one-man interpretation of William Shakespeare's tragic play, "Macbeth," to Broadway this spring, producers said Friday.

The Scottish-born Cumming performed sold-out engagements of the show at the National Theatre of Scotland and the Lincoln Center Festival.

The actor was the Tony- and Olivier Award winning star of the Broadway musical "Cabaret." He also is a cast member of TV's "The Good Wife."

Produced by Ken Davenport, the National Theatre of Scotland's "Macbeth" will play a strictly limited 73-performance engagement at Broadway's Ethel Barrymore Theatre.

Preview performances are to begin April 7, with an official opening night set for April 21. The Broadway engagement will conclude June 30.

Directed by Tony Award winner John Tiffany and Andrew Goldberg, the production is set in a clinical room within a dark psychiatric unit. Cumming plays the lone patient, who relives the infamous story of "Macbeth" and inhabits each role himself.

"Performing 'Macbeth' last year was the most challenging and fulfilling experience of my career by far, and so I am both honored and daunted to do it again in my adopted hometown of New York City," Cumming said in a statement. "I'm also proud of the fact that the National Theatre of Scotland is directly funded by the Scottish government and I cannot think of a better way to trumpet Scotland and its commitment to the arts than being a Scotsman doing his National Theatre's production of the Scottish play on the Great White Way."
