Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert fractures hip

CHICAGO, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert confirmed on Twitter he is hospitalized after fracturing his hip.

His wife, Chaz, tweeted Thursday her 70-year-old spouse injured himself performing "tricky disco dance moves," but is "doing well, asking for a computer, will probably tweet."

Ebert later posted his own Twitter message confirming the fracture and reporting "no surgery needed."

The Pulitzer Prize-winning writer survived thyroid and jaw cancer but lost his voice as a result of the diseases and treatment.


Osama bin Laden picture 'Zero Dark Thirty' to screen in D.C. Jan. 8

WASHINGTON, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Director Kathryn Bigelow's award-winning film "Zero Dark Thirty" is to screen Jan. 8 at the Newseum in Washington, organizers said.

The drama about the decade-long CIA hunt for Osama bin Laden that culminated in the 2011 Navy Seals slaying of the terrorist leader, is to open in New York and Los Angeles Dec. 19, then expand nationwide Jan. 11.

Bigelow and journalist-screenwriter Mark Boal are expected to discuss the film following the Washington screening, The Hollywood Reporter said.

A guest list for the showing has not been released to the public, but is expected to include lawmakers and other political figures, the entertainment industry trade newspaper said.

The movie was named the year's best by the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Board of Review. It is widely expected to earn Oscar nominations as well next month.


Gisele Bundchen gives birth to second child, a daughter

BOSTON, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Model Gisele Bundchen, New England quarterback Tom Brady's wife, gave birth this week to their second child, a daughter named Vivian, The Boston Globe reported.

The fashion model and Patriots star married in 2009 and are also the parents of a 2-year-old son named Benjamin.

Benjamin's little sister was born Wednesday night, the Globe said Friday.

No other details regarding the child's birth were immediately available.

Brady also has a 5-year-old son, John, with his ex-girlfriend, actress Bridget Moynahan.


'Boardwalk,' 'Girls' up for top writing awards

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- The Writers Guild of America has nominated "Boardwalk Empire," "Breaking Bad" "Game of Thrones," "Homeland" and "Mad Men" for its Best TV Drama Award.

Shortlisted Thursday for the Best TV Comedy prize are "30 Rock," "Girls," "Louie," "Modern Family" and "Parks and Recreation."

In the running for Best New TV Series are "Girls," "The Mindy Project," "Nashville," "The Newsroom" and "Veep."

Up for the WGA Award for Best TV Comedy/Variety program are "The Colbert Report," "Conan," "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," "Jimmy Kimmel Live," "Key & Peele," "Portlandia," "Real Time with Bill Maher" and "Saturday Night Live."

The winners will be honored at the 2013 Writers Guild Awards Feb. 17 at simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York.
