LOS ANGELES, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Joan Rivers chained herself to a shopping cart at a Costco in Burbank, Calif., to protest the chain store's refusal to sell the 79-year-old comedian's new book.

Costco declined to carry Rivers' memoir "I Hate Everyone ... Starting with Me," which has made The New York Times bestseller list, because foul language appears on the book's cover.

Burbank store spokesman Drew Sugars told the Los Angeles Times Rivers was talking about her book while chained to the cart Tuesday and refused to leave until police were called.

"She had a whole entourage," Sugars told the newspaper. "Sounds like a staged media event."

Police arrived on the scene and Rivers left peacefully. The Times said no summonses were issued or arrests made.
