Kutcher's online ad knocked as racist

LOS ANGELES, May 3 (UPI) -- An online commercial for potato chips featuring U.S. actor Ashton Kutcher as a Bollywood producer in "brown face" was yanked after being criticized as racist.

The popchips video, which was unviewable Wednesday night after being designated "private," is a parody of a dating-service ad and showed Kutcher playing "Raj," with an Indian accent and his face darkened, who is "looking for the most delicious thing on the planet," specifically someone who is "Kardashian hot."

The New York Daily News reported the skit didn't play well with some who were quick to post messages on Twitter, such as this one from blogger Anil Dash: "Hey, startups that are helping @aplusk get richer, can you tell him that racist brownface ads aren't cool? Thanks!"

The Hollywood Reporter said the company issued a statement apologizing for any hard feelings.

"The new popchips worldwide dating video and ad campaign featuring four characters was created to provoke a few laughs and was never intended to stereotype or offend anyone," a popchips representative said.

"At popchips we embrace all types of shapes, flavors and colors, and appreciate all snackers, no matter their race or ethnicity. We hope people can enjoy this in the spirit it was intended."

Kutcher also portrayed a hippie stoner, a tattooed southern redneck and a euro-fashionista.

LONDON, May 3 (UPI) -- British royal couple William and Kate spent their first wedding anniversary at The Crown Inn in rural Westleton, England, witnesses said.

Staff at the small 12th century country hotel told The Daily Telegraph the duke and duchess of Cambridge "wanted to be treated just like everybody else" and joined other guests in the dining room for a breakfast of bacon and eggs last weekend.

The newspaper reported Thursday the couple had been in the area for the wedding of Hannah Gillingham, one of Kate's best friends from school, and her new husband, Robert Carter.

"We were made aware that some special guests were arriving but we didn't know just how special,"

general manager Gareth Clarke told the Telegraph.

"It was a lovely family occasion with a relaxed atmosphere and they both seemed really happy to be in a comfortable environment with friends," Clarke said. "William and Kate pitched up at about 1 a.m. and enjoyed a drink at the bar before retiring to the Swan room for the night. They both ate a cooked breakfast of bacon and eggs before they left in the morning. They're the first royalty we've had staying with us. It's not every day you welcome the second in line to the throne."

The Telegraph said the couple left the inn Sunday and headed home for a quiet dinner to celebrate their anniversary. William and Kate were married in a lavish ceremony in London April 29, 2011.
