Beastie Boys, The Cure get Rock Hall nods
NEW YORK, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- The Beastie Boys, The Cure and Donovan were nominated Tuesday for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland next year.
Also nominated are Eric B. & Rakim, Guns 'N Roses, Heart, Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, Freddie King, Laura Nyro, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rufus with Chaka Khan, The Small Faces/The Faces, The Spinners, Donna Summer and War.
"The 2012 nominees embody the broad scope of what 'rock 'n' roll' means," Joel Peresman, president and chief executive officer of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, said in a statement Tuesday. "From vocal groups to hip hop, from singer-songwriters to hard rocking artists, this group represents the spirit of what we celebrate at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."
Ballots will be sent to more than 500 voters, who will select artists to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the 27th annual Induction Ceremony to be held April 14.
To be eligible for nomination, an individual artist or band must have released its first single or album at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. All inductees are ultimately represented in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland.
Michael Moore backs Wall Street activists
NEW YORK, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Filmmaker Michael Moore conveyed his support to Occupy Wall Street activists, joining them at a park near Wall Street, as the protest expanded to other cities.
Moore visited Liberty Plaza Park, formerly known as Zuccotti Park, in New York's financial district Monday evening to shout approval to the activists after they marched through the district that houses many major financial institutions, including the New York Stock Exchange and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
They have used the park near the World Trade Center site as a campground and staging area for their actions since Sept. 17.
"I am honored to be in your presence," Moore told several hundred people in the park, saying each of them represented thousands of other Americans.
"One-hundred years from now people will remember that you came down to this plaza and started this movement," Suite101.com reported Moore as saying.
Activist Noam Chomsky endorsed the Wall Street movement Monday, praising protesters for what he called their "courageous and honorable" action and announcing his solidarity with them.
The protesters are demanding changes to U.S. social and economic policies they say unfairly favor the rich.
No plans for Middleton to pose for Vogue
LONDON, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Kate Middleton's spokeswoman says there are no plans for Britain's duchess of Cambridge to pose for American Vogue, contrary to reports claiming she will.
People.com reported the denial was a response to rumors claiming Middleton, Prince William's fashionable new bride, is to be featured in a magazine layout shot by renowned photographer Mario Testino.
"There are no plans for the duchess to do anything with U.S. Vogue," Middleton's spokeswoman told People.com.
Farmer stops Rihanna's video shoot
BANGOR, Ireland, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- An Irish farmer says he evicted Rihanna from his grain field because the music video the Barbadian pop star was shooting there was "inappropriate."
Alan Graham told the BBC he was getting his tractor Monday when he spotted the recording artist wearing a skimpy bra top and low-slung jeans and frolicking in his field in Bangor, County Down.
"I thought it was inappropriate. I requested them to stop and they did," Graham said.
"I had my conversation with Rihanna and I hope she understands where I'm coming from. We shook hands," he said. "From my point of view, it was my land, I have an ethos and I felt it was inappropriate. I wish no ill will against Rihanna and her friends. Perhaps they could acquaint themselves with a greater God."
Graham told the BBC he didn't know who the singer was before her representatives called him and asked for permission to use his property for the video shoot.
