'Modern Family' wins big at Emmy Awards
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- The sitcom "Modern Family" won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series at a ceremony in Los Angeles Sunday night.
The show, which follows three branches of a quirky California family, also picked up the prizes for Supporting Actor and Actress, Directing and Writing.
"I don't know what I'm going to talk about in therapy next week now," Julie Bowen joked as she collected her Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Emmy. "I can't believe this."
"Thank you so much for this honor," Ty Burrell, Bowen's small-screen husband said as he accepted his matching Supporting Actor Emmy.
Melissa McCarthy won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her work in "Mike & Molly."
In addition to her statuette, McCarthy was also presented with a tiara and flowers.
"Holy smokes. This is my first and best pageant ever," she remarked.
Jim Parsons won the Emmy for Lead Actor for "The Big Bang Theory."
"Glee" star Jane Lynch served as host of the event.
'Mildred Pierce,' 'Downton Abbey' win multiple Emmys
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- "Mad Men" was named Outstanding Drama Series for a fourth consecutive year at the Emmy Awards show in Los Angeles.
The 1960s New York-set advertising drama was shut out of all the other major categories Sunday night, however.
Set in early 20th century England, "Downton Abbey," a drama about a wealthy family and those who serve them, was one of Emmy night's big winners. It earned the prize for Outstanding TV Movie or Miniseries, as well as the awards for Writing and Directing for a TV Movie or Miniseries, and Supporting Actress in a TV Movie or Miniseries for Maggie Smith.
Barry Pepper won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries for "The Kennedys."
"Mildred Pierce" co-stars Kate Winslet and Guy Pearce won the Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actress and Supporting Actor in a TV Movie or Miniseries.
Kyle Chandler took home the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series trophy for "Friday Night Lights" and Julianna Margulies won the Lead Actress statuette for "The Good Wife."
Margo Martindale earned the honor for Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for "Justified" and Peter Dinklage the Supporting Actor in a Drama Series Emmy for "Game of Thrones."
Tracy Morgan and Megan Wallover get engaged
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- U.S. comedian and actor Tracy Morgan has confirmed he is engaged to marry model Megan Wallover.
UsMagazine.com said Morgan announced the news as he and his bride-to-be headed up the red carpet at Sunday's Prime-time Emmy Awards show in Los Angeles.
"We got engaged six months ago!" Morgan told E! News.
"We were in San Francisco," Wallover added. "It wasn't anything crazy. He was on bended knee."
Morgan, a cast member of TV's "30 Rock," divorced his wife Sabrina in 2009 after 23 years of marriage. They have three sons, UsMagazine.com said.
Susan Boyle's third CD set for release
NEW YORK, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Susan Boyle, who became an unlikely star while competing on "Britain's Got Talent" in 2009, has recorded her third album, Syco/Columbia Records said Monday.
Boyle's album "Someone to Watch Over Me" is to go on sale Nov. 1 in the United States.
The CD will include Boyle's renditions of classics such as "Unchained Melody" and "Both Sides Now," as well as the original songs "This Will be the Year" by Emeli Sande and Naughty Boy with Josh Kear, and "Return" by Steve Mac and Wayne Hector.
The recording star sold 14 million copies of her first two albums in 14 months.
Boyle, 50, said her song choices for "Someone" were influenced by fans who related to her life story and shared their histories with her.
"There are certain songs that I liked that resonated with the letters that people had written and sent to me," Boyle said in a statement Monday. "I knew that's what my record needed to be about. They wrote about grief, love, happy and sad times; it was all deeply moving and the songs I selected mirror their emotions and life experiences."
