LOS ANGELES, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- Redmond O'Neal, son of actors Ryan O'Neal and the late Farrah Fawcett, pleaded no contest to felony drug and gun charges Wednesday in a Los Angeles court.

Redmond O'Neal was stopped in Santa Monica, Calif., this month after allegedly running a red light. He was arrested after officers said they found heroin in his car, the Los Angeles Times said.

It was unclear what brought the charges of firearms possessions by a felon, the newspaper said.

The younger O'Neal, who has been addicted to narcotics and has tried rehab unsuccessfully several times, has been jailed repeatedly for crimes related to substance abuse, the Times said.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Keith Schwartz put a hold on Redmond O'Neal's three-year prison sentence for a probation violation in lieu of five years' probation, with an order to complete one year within a live-in drug rehabilitation facility.
