Royal wedding still set in Monaco

MONACO, June 28 (UPI) -- An adviser to Monaco's Prince Albert says he is still set to marry Charlene Wittstock despite French news reports claiming the wedding has been called off.

L'Express reported Albert's fiancee, a former Olympic swimmer, headed home to South Africa "only hours after learning that Albert had not been leading the exemplary life she thought."

However, Christiane Stahl, a chief adviser to Prince Albert at palace in Monaco, told People.com Tuesday morning the story is "completely, completely crazy."

"Please believe me, none of this is true, and we think it comes from utter jealousy," Stahl said. "Charlene never left to go to the airport, nothing like that ever happened. She was never upset and never wanted to stop the wedding."

Albert's longtime lawyer, Maitre Thierry Lacoste, also dismissed the story as "madness" and has vowed to seek an injunction against L'Express, People.com reported.

"The prince's palace firmly denies the allegations made in the press this morning on the Web site Express.fr. These rumors spread a few days before the wedding ceremonies of H.S.H. Prince Albert and Miss Charlene Wittstock have only one purpose to seriously damage the sovereign's image and by consequence that of Miss Wittstock and to cause serious prejudice to a happy event," said an official statement issued by the palace.

The wedding is scheduled for Saturday.

The prince is the son of the late Prince Rainier III, Louis Henri Maxence Bertrand Grimaldi, and the late Princess Grace, a one-time Hollywood screen actress. He also is a former Olympic bobsledder.

Prince Albert II succeeded his father as ruler of Monaco July 12, 2005.
