Randy and Evi Quaid released

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- U.S actor Randy Quaid and his wife Evi, seeking sanctuary in Canada, were freed Wednesday after five days in an immigration holding facility in Vancouver.

Randy Quaid is to have an immigration hearing Thursday, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported. It turns out his wife already has Canadian citizenship because her father was born in the country, the couple's attorney, Catherine Sas, said.

"Your newest citizen," Randy Quaid, 60, said to reporters as he hugged his wife while leaving the Immigration Canada office building.

"I've got nothing against my beloved America. I love my country ... . I've always enjoyed coming here. It's not a question of either-or. I like this place. I like that place. I just want a place where I can work and enjoy my life and not feel that someone's, you know, always following me around and trying to steal from me."

Evi Quaid, 47, said she is "just so proud, because I love Canada, I truly do."

"Everybody has the same sense of humour as me. It's big, it's beautiful. Like my husband," she said.

The Quaids had been in custody since Friday when they requested refugee status, claiming their lives were in danger in the United States from emotionally unbalanced celebrity stalkers, the CBC said.

The Quaids face felony burglary charges and misdemeanor counts in California for allegedly squatting in and damaging a home they once owned in Santa Barbara. They are wanted on $500,000 bench warrants issued in Santa Barbara.
