LA puts rave promoters on notice

LOS ANGELES, July 17 (UPI) -- The board of the Los Angeles Coliseum voted to extend the moratorium on new raves and ban minors from the remaining scheduled events.

The board decided Friday to allow party promoters "one last chance to clean up their act" after a 15-year-old girl died of a suspected drug overdose June 29 at the Electric Daisy Carnival, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"You're on probation. The question is whether you wind up gone or back in society," Coliseum Commissioner David Israel told Pasquale Rotella, founder of Insomniac Events, which produced the event where Sasha Rodriguez died.

The commission said promoters must enforce a strict age limit of 18, provide emergency medical services on site and educate partiers about the dangers of ecstasy and other illegal drugs. Upcoming events at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Sports Arena in August, October and December will prove to be make-or-break for the rave scene at the venue, the Times said.

"You know you've got ecstasy and other drug problems at these concerts. … You have influence over what your acts are saying," Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky scolded Rotella. "Can't you put your thinking cap on and create a new dynamic in the arena? Do something proactive … that keeps your patrons alive."

"There are no perfect events," Los Angeles City Councilman Bernard Parks said in defending the raves. "I don't think we should leave here thinking that we will have things in the future with no incidents."
