PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa, July 2 (UPI) -- Police in South Africa arrested Paris Hilton for marijuana possession but then released her, a publicist for the U.S. socialite and reality TV personality said.

UsMagazine.com reported the 29-year-old celebrity had been expected to appear in a Port Elizabeth, South Africa, court on drug-related charges after she was allegedly found to be in possession of an unspecified amount of marijuana during the Brazil vs. Netherlands World Cup quarterfinal match at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

However, Hilton's publicist subsequently told TMZ the celebrity was released after police questioned her. The Web site said investigators apologized for mistaking Hilton for a member of her entourage who was allegedly seen smoking marijuana at the match.

The unidentified other person pleaded guilty, paid a fine and also was released from police custody, Hilton's representative told TMZ.

The former star of "The Simple Life" pleaded no contest in 2007 to alcohol-related reckless driving.
