Researchers say they found Caravaggio

FLORENCE, Italy, June 16 (UPI) -- Researchers from four Italian universities say they found the remains of Renaissance artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio in a church in Tuscany.

The team, which spent a year using DNA and carbon dating techniques in its research, said it is 85 percent certain the bones kept in an ossuary in a church crypt in Porto Ercole belong to the painter, the BBC reported Wednesday.

Caravaggio is believed to have died in the early 17th century of sunstroke while weakened by syphilis, the researchers said. The whereabouts of his remains were previously unknown.

The painter's works include "Bacchus," "The Supper at Emmaus" and "Sacrifice of Isaac."
