Giacometti sculpture sold for $104M

NEW YORK, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- "Walking Man I," a 6-foot-tall bronze sculpture by Alberto Giacometti, has been sold at a London auction for $104.3 million, Sotheby's said Wednesday.

The amount set a record for a work of art sold at auction, The Wall Street Journal reported.

About 10 people battled for the 1960 work by the late Swiss artist before it was eventually sold to a telephone bidder, who wished to remain anonymous.

Pablo Picasso's 1906 portrait "Boy with a Pipe" was the previous price record holder, selling for $104.2 million in 2004 to an unknown buyer.

Giacometti died in 1966 at the age of 64.
