Police said he was drunk and speeding when he crashed his Mercedes into a telephone pole, killing 34-year-old Andreas Zini and ejecting Avary's wife, Gretchen, from the vehicle, seriously injuring her.
The Los Angeles Times reported his sentencing Thursday.
Avary, 44, won an Oscar for co-writing the 1994 movie "Pulp Fiction" with Quentin Tarantino. His other film credits include "Beowulf," "Silent Hill" and "The Rules of Attraction."
