Singer Cohen recovering after collapse

VALENCIA, Spain, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Canadian singer Leonard Cohen is recovering following his collapse on stage during a performance in Spain, a spokesman for his music company says.

The BBC reported Sunday that Cohen, 74, collapsed Friday while performing the song "Bird on a Wire" during a show in Valencia, Spain, and was hospitalized after being treated by stadium medical staff.

Cohen was later discharged from the hospital after reportedly being diagnosed with a case of food poisoning, the BBC said.

The "Suzanne" singer will go through with a Barcelona concert scheduled for Monday, organizers said.

The Times of London said Monday also marks Cohen's 75th birthday. The singer, known for his deep voice and poetic songs, came out of retirement five years ago after a disputed case of mismanagement cost him musical royalties.

The Times said following Monday's concert in Barcelona, Cohen is scheduled for a series of October performances in the United States.
